Lesufi stresses need to regain ANC support before elections

ANC Gauteng Chairperson Panyaza Lesufi has emphasised the need to win the province back in the 2024 national elections. The party lost all metros in the province in the 2021 local government elections. Lesufi was speaking at the 14th ANC Gauteng conference at the Birchwood Hotel in Benoni on Gauteng’s Eastrand yesterday. He stressed the need to regain the support of the electorate ahead of the national elections.

“We are left with 19 months before the next elections in our province. We are left with 19minths before we prepare this movement to be attractive to our people. We are left with 19 months to renew our mandate in the contract that we have promised to our people. You will agree with me, within these 19 months, there is no time to play. Within that 19 months we have no time to point fingers at each other. We need a disciplined movement that has disciplined members that will marshall us to victory in 2024”, says Lesufi.

Ekurhuleni votes

Meanwhile, delegates at the conference have called for the opening of the quarantined votes from the Ekurhuleni conference. The provincial conference was delayed after concerns over the quarantined votes from the Ekurhuleni regional conference.

The regional conference saw only preliminary results being announced. The 19 votes from six branches were quarantined due to alleged irregularities. Despite this, these delegates were allowed to vote in the Gauteng conference.

The opening of the votes could affect the results of the outcomes of the Ekurhuleni conference and the Top 5 in Gauteng. Former Provincial Secretary Jacob Khawe explains.

“The ANC PEC, resolved to give the new PEC the opportunity to do some work and this work includes investigation of how these branches get re-verified when others did not. Delegates are asking the conference to make a decision and I think the conference must do so. What does this decision mean? It means the provincial conference says, you can open the quarantined votes and allow their numbers to be counted, whatever it represents, respect that decision”, says Khawe.
