Funke Akindele Confirms Nomination as Lagos PDP Deputy Governorship Candidate A Week after Oscar Invite

Nollywood actress and producer Funke Akindele, has been nominated as running mate for the Lagos State Governorship candidate of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Olajide ‘Jandor’ Adediran.

The seasoned actress made her PDP Deputy Governorship nomination known through her official Instagram page on Tuesday, July 11, 2022, putting to rest speculation about her nomination that has been circulating in the media for more than a week.

In a three-minute and 14-second video where she confirmed her nomination as PDP deputy governorship candidate, Akindele, an indigene of Ikorodu in Lagos East Senatorial District, revealed reasons for her decision to venture into politics.

She said, “I have watched with great concern the plight of the less fortunate, especially in the youth category. This drifted me towards my less popular but equally strong passion, which is to help, assist and contribute to the growth of youths, women and children”.

Meanwhile, the filmmaker’s gubernatorial nomination comes a week after her Oscar invitation by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) to be an Oscar organiser.

To complete a perfect trio, Funke Akindele joined Blessing Egbe and Nigerian actor Daniel K. Daniel as part of AMPAS organisers and executives – a selection process based on professional qualifications, equity, inclusion and commitment to representation.

Known for her comical roles and passionate acting, the NET Honours 2022 Most Popular Actress is famous for starring in movies such as ‘Jenifa’s Diary’, ‘Omo Ghetto: The Saga’, ‘A trip to Jamaica’, ‘Maami’ and many more.

However, Funke ‘Jenifa’ Akindele’s guber nomination means that a career spanning over 25 years will be put on hold for what she considers “a much bigger facet of service to humanity”.

“My decision is not just to accept this huge responsibility but to also work tirelessly and complement Jandor’s burning desire to see our dear Lagos live up to its full potential”, she concluded in the video posted on her verified Instagram page.

Olajide ‘Jandor’ Adediran, on his own part, is a media entrepreneur, technocrat, philanthropist and founder of CoreTv. He is the Lead Visioner of Jandor Foundation, a non-governmental organization established to empower and liberate the less priviledged, especially in Lagos. The Mushin-born journalist is the PDP gubernatorial candidate for Lagos, Nigeria, 2023.
